The Pumphouse, an unassuming building set high on the Backsberg property against the slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain, is surrounded by nutrient-rich weathered granite. The 20-year-old vines have optimal sun exposure on the slopes resulting in healthy yields. Once pressed the warm fermented Shiraz is transferred to small 90% French and 10% American oak barrels to finish fermenting, maturating, and aging for 12-18 months. The oak barrels lend notes of aniseed and vanilla to the wine. You'll also discover expressions of leather, cracked pepper, dark fruit, smoke, and licorice within the glass. Pair this velvety and deep red with hearty stews and roasts that can stand next to this Shiraz.
