Just a few kilometers from Palermo in the heart of the Monreale DOC lies the Sallier de La Tour Estate. The land has been in the family, for 8 generations, dating back to the mid 19th Century. Inspired by the belief that classic grapes are able to "translate the language of a given territory," the family spent years of experimentation to identify the ideal location to realize this belief. La Monaca, a hill behind the estate, proved to be that location in part due to it's rich natural water resources, sandy soil, active limestone and richness of potassium. The northeast exposure provides good sunlight with protection from hot summer temperatures. Combined with the breeze from the Gulf of Castellammare, these factors allow for consistent and thorough ripening. The result is full-bodied Syrah with high tannins, acid, alcohol and intensity. Aged in French oak for 14 months, and an additional 8 months in the bottle prior to release. Expect lush dark fruit flavors with acccents of liccorice, slate & tobacco. Arancini with a rich ragu sauce will go quite nicely with this wine.
