Named for the island in the Philippines, Bodegas Luzon has been operating since the mid-1880's. As 1 of only 38 Spanish wineries holding a Wineries for Climate Protection certificate it has committed to sustainable farming. Grapes for 'Altos de Luzon' are 100% organic Monastrell & come exclusively from the La Merla plot, located at an altitude of 2,200 feet in Jumilla. The vines, averaging 40+ years in age, grow in coarse sandy & stony soils which produce small, highly concentrated berries. Manually harvested, individual berries are then selected by hand prior to fermentation. Twelve months in French & American oak provides fine tannins to this powerfully aromatic, deeply colored red wine. Flavors of sweet spice & soft smokiness accentuate the rich red & black fruits. Full-bodied & lively, an excellent companion to grilled lamb.
