DOC Gutturnio Superiore, Emilia-Romagna, Italy
Self-taught winemaker Anacleto Bonelli founded Cantine Bonelli in 1946 with a commitment to enhance the Trebbia Valley and its natural and human resources. The practicing organic winery is today being run by the third and fourth generations of the Bonelli family, and they work exclusively with grapes native to the Colli-Piacentini region of western Emilia-Romagna. Gutturnio has long been considered the most prestigious location in Emilia-Romagna's Colli Piacentini, and received it's own DOC status in 2010. The name itself comes from an ancient Roman wine jug called a 'gutturnium.' This dry and full-bodied bend of 60% Barbera & 40% Bonarda (known locally as Croatina) receives 4-6 months of aging in Slavonian oak casks prior to release. The powerful red and black fruit flavors of cherry, plum, red currant & blueberry are interlaced with a bit of earthiness and a little spice. Pair with bolognese or roasted pork.
