The Cannonau grape is not only indigenous to Sardinia, but it likely also originated there on the island rather than having migrated from another region. It is a late-ripening varietal that thrives in hot, dry conditions and makes velvety red wines with bold structure and well-integrated tannins. The winemakers at Cantina Santa Maria La Palma began their efforts in the post-war agriculture renaissance and have earned a reputation for being viticulture pioneers for this region. This wine, La Bombarde, is named for the beach of the same name, which is home to several vineyards. With 100% Cannonau, the wine brings intense ruby color along with aromas of cherry and raspberry. It is warming with soft tannins and would pair well with hearty Mediterranean dishes, like lamb tagine or stuffed eggplant.
