Bordeaux, France
While the most famous wines of Bordeaux are powerful, cellar-worthy red blends, Pessac-Leognan, just southwest of the city of Bordeaux, is also home to some of the world's finest dry white wines. Pessac-Leognan is also home to some of the region’s oldest estates; La Louviere has modest roots, dating back to the early 1300s when it was merely a small dwelling with a tower in the middle of a large clearing. In time, however, the surrounding gravelly soil along the small Eau Blanche river was planted to vineyards and a chateau was born. With an enticing bouquet of ripe peaches, Meyer lemon, white flowers and toffee, this wine is dense and richly textured but well balanced by a strong backbone of bright acidity and salinity. Notes of orange peel, orchard fruit and herbs de provence present up front, but give way to spice and salted caramel as the wine opens in the glass and lingers pleasantly on the palate. Enjoy alongside classic roast poultry, seared scallops with garlic sauce or creamy, semi-aged cheeses.
