Melon de Bourgogne
Muscadet Sevre et Maine, Loire Valley, France
Muscadet Sevre-et-Maine is named for the rivers Sevre and Maine, which meet here and run through the vineyards on the western edge of the Loire Valley, and is best known for its fresh, dry white wines made from the Melon de Bourgogne grape. Comte Leloup, a family owned winery, has been operating since the 1960’s with over 100 year old vines. Each grape is hand harvested and moved for vinification to their hillside cellar, where they let gravity do all of the work. The wine is then aged on lees for 14 months and after spends two years continuing to age in the bottle. This well balanced Muscadet presents notes of salinity, green fruit, lemon, and honey. Pair this with smoked salmon verrines or mussels in a butter sauce.
