DOC Valpolicella Ripasso Classico Superiore
Veneto, Italy
The Guerrieri-Rizzardi winery dates back to the 15th century when the Guerrieri ancestors developed their own estate. In the 17th century the Rizzardi family purchased the Pojera estate, having no idea their families would be married three centuries later. Guerrieri-Rizzardi was officially formed in 1913 and they had their first vintage bottled and labeled in 1914. This winery is comprised of four breathtaking estates, including one in Valpolicella where only red wine varieties are grown. This dry red is made up of multiple varietals including Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella and Merlot. Up to 10% of this wine is declassified Amarone, which requires the grapes to be partially dried in a method known as "appassimento." This wine is aromatic with notes of ripe, dark fruit, like figs and finishes with a well balanced amount of leather and tobacco. It is best when cellared an additional 2-6 years. Whether you choose to enjoy it immediately or wait a few years, it pairs well with hearty game dishes.
