Pinot Nero (Pinot Noir)
Alto Adige, Italy
With five generations of winemaking in the northeastern Italian region of Alto-Adige and the only producer to have vineyard sites on both sides of the Adige River, J. Hofstatter was also the first winemaker in this area to produce single vineyard wines at the equivalent of the grand cru level. Barthenau Vigna S. Urbano is one such single vineyard wine, made of 100% Pinot Nero from a site that sits on a plateau overlooking the valley. The wine spends 9 months in small oak barriques followed by 6 months in larger oak barrels and finishes with a year in bottle before release, creating a balanced and beautiful integration of slightly dried cherries, black plum, licorice and crushed violets with notes of sweet tobacco and cocoa. This elegant wine is able to be enjoyed and appreciated now, but will continue to develop exquisitely for years to come.
