The Montecucco region is a relative newcomer to the Italian wine scene, having been established in 1998. It is located in the southern portion of Tuscany, bordering some of Montalcino's best houses. The winemaker's story is a well-kept secret, but the wines have won fans the world over. The Poggio d'Oro Riserva is made from 100% Sangiovese grapes, and the wine is certified organic, as is two-thirds of the wine grown in the region. Richly complex, the wine boasts hints of leather with savory notes of eucalyptus, aged oak, chocolate, and cherries. With solid structure, it would pair well with roasted game birds and roasted potatoes.
