When brothers Daniel and Gonzalo Amigo returned to El Bierzo, Spain to recover their grandparents' vineyard they weren't quite sure what to expect. Much to their surprise they found established 100-year old vines of Godello and Mencia on the steep-south facing slope of the property. Menica is the undisputed top varietal of Bierzo. With gentle tannins, dark cherry and bramble fruit, some compare this wine to a cross between cool-climate Syrah and Cabernet Franc. It is incredibly food friendly and can be served lightly chilled paired with chicken or light red meat dishes cooked in wine or a tomato sauce.
