Translating to "Countercurrent" or "Beyond the Stream", Oltretorrente is a husband and wife project started in 2010 by Chiara Penati and Michele Conoscente. The two Milanese agronomists purchased 1.5 hectares of vines in the village of Paderna, set in the hills of the Tortona region (Colli Tortonesi) in southeast Piedmont, where there are only 30 estates bottling wine. From vines ranging from 15 to 100 years old, the couple create wines of distinct character, like this Barbera and Dolcetto blend. The wine shows notes of black cherry and stewed plums, with hints of tobacco and dried herbs.
