Soave Classico, Italy
The first single-vineyard Soave Classico, 'Calvarino' from the esteemed Pieropan has become something of cult wine since its first vintage in the 1970s. The name ‘Calvarino’ derives from ‘Little Calvary’ reflecting how difficult the soil here is to work, as well as the tortuous path that winds from top to bottom. A traditional blend of Garganega amd Trebbiano, the vines from which the fruit for 'Calvarino' comes from are between 30 and 60 years old, providing concentrated aromas of golden apples, lemon zest, elderflower and dried marjoram. On the palate, expect ripe citrus, pineapple and a racy minerality that can only come from this type of volcanic soil. Enjoy this bottle with vegetable quiches or cheese souffle.
