Friuli Colli Orientali, Italy
One of our favorite family run wineries with a history dating back to the middle ages, Visinitini is located in the hills behind Corno di Rosazzo. The grape is Schioppettino - a difficult grape that was nearly lost to extinction in the late 19th century when growers began replacing this grape with more widely known (and lucrative) varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon. Today, the Visintini family only bottles this wine once every decade or so due to its challenging nature. Expect plush black fruit, plums, violets and prominent notes of black pepper. Pairs nicely with Italian sausage and fennel pizza.
